Story of "Smoke"
Chap wrote "Smoke" in Los Angeles, CA while he was working the overnight shift at Record Plant Recording Studio. Here's the story behind the lyrics told by Chap:
Before heading to the graveyard shift, a studio manager witnesses what-could-have-been love. Each night, he takes out the trash around the same hour on his way to work. One night the alley wasn't empty. A man and a woman were having a cigarette on opposite sides of the street. The manager mused that their lonely faces could easily be comforted, and that they didn't have to sit alone in smoke and silence, unless they chose to. Strangers or a couple pretending to be, the manager saw a story there.
